Thermal Contrast Drops Below the Scan Threshold
Here's something vendors won't tell you: direct thermal labels print only as dark as the heat they receive. DYMO LabelWriter printers allow you to adjust print density, and offices routinely lower it to extend print-head life. The result is a label that looks readable to the eye but falls below the print contrast ratio USPS scanners require.
I've also seen thermal rolls stored in the wrong conditions: a roll left in a hot van, a box near a window, labels exposed to direct sunlight. Heat-degraded thermal stock doesn't print dark enough. The label comes out faint, and nobody notices until the barcode fails.

- Store labels properly. Keep thermal rolls in their packaging at room temperature. Avoid hot vehicles, humid warehouses, and direct sunlight. The label stock is part of the printing system. Treat it that way.
- Verify the software label size. Most shipping platforms have a label size setting. Confirm it matches the roll loaded in the printer. I've seen wrong-configuration errors more times than I can count.
The Honest Limitation
If you're printing ten address labels a week, the 30334 is perfect. I use them myself.
But if you ship regularly with USPS tracking barcodes, I'll say it plainly: the 30334 isn't the right tool. Get the 4x6 shipping labels. They cost a little more per label, and that difference is nothing compared to a single missed deadline.
The fix I described works for about 80% of the label failures I've debugged. It won't help if the problem is a damaged print head or a printer that's been dropped one too many times. But those cases are rare.
There's no setting that makes a compressed barcode scannable. No software update that changes the physical size of a 2-7/16" x 4" label. The right answer is boring and cheap: use the label that matches the USPS spec.
