Step 2 – Remove the Empty Core (If There Is One)

Slide the roll onto the spindle. Make sure it's snug but not forced. Then place the spindle back into the printer, left notch first, then click the right side into place.

Step 4 – Route the Label Strip Through the Guides

Now take the loose end and guide it under the white plastic roller and up through the slot toward the front of the printer. You'll see two adjustable side guides (silver metal). Move them inward so they just touch the edges of the label strip—don't pinch them tight. The strip should slide freely with a tiny bit of side play.

I've tested a ton of label brands, but Dymo's own labels are the most consistent for thickness. Still, if you ever use third‑party labels, check that the guides don't bow the paper.

Feed the strip until about 2 inches stick out past the front of the printer. That's enough for the printer to grab.

Step 5 – Align the Labels with the Print Head

Before closing the lid, look at the label strip from the front. Is it straight? The print head inside the lid should be centered over the label. If the strip is angled, the printer will print off‑center. You might not notice until you've printed 100 crooked labels.

Adjust by shifting the roll side‑to‑side on the spindle until the label strip naturally runs straight. Then close the lid firmly until you hear a click.

Step 6 – Run the Automatic Label Alignment (Critical Step)

Turn the printer back on. When it initializes, it will feed a few inches of labels automatically to calibrate. If you're using a 550 Turbo, the printer has an auto‑alignment feature—but only if you let it finish. Don't start printing right away. Wait for the green light to be solid.
